Mia is a 17 year old musician with a great family, a punk rock boyfriend and a wonderful best friend.
On a rare snow day in Oregon, everything suddenly changes in the blink of an eye. When a car accident pulls her from consciousness and leaves her confused and alone, she watches from the sidelines as her own damaged body is being pulled from the wreck. There's nothing she can do but watch. No one can see or hear her, but she can see and hear everything they say and do. Mia is able to follow her family and friends around the ICU and she sees how everyone is affected by what has happened.
In a series of flashbacks, you see how Mia's life has come to be how it is now and what if could be if she makes the decision to wake up. It is after all her decision. But what will she wake up to? Her family is gone and everything will change. Will she stay or will she go?
Would I recommend this book?
Yes, in a heartbeat. It's a beautiful story and very well written. Forman takes you through Mia's life and you see all of the love, all of the hard times and everything that she would be leaving behind. There are points in the story that get pretty emotional, it almost pulls you into the moment so you know exactly how she was feeling right then and there. Reading what Mia sees herself go through from her outside perspective makes this story that much more intriguing.
While this story is targeted more for the teen and young adult audience. I think that it's a book everyone should read. "If I Stay" is certainly one of the best books I've read this year. Another plus is that it's a super fast read - it took me all of about 3 1/2 hours to read the whole thing.
