*WARNING* Long and Photo Heavy!
A little history on the house: it has been on the market for well over three years. It was an estate managed by the older couples several children. It's a large home with a lot of potential, but no one seemed to want to step up to the challenge.
Well, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED :)
While shopping for a new home, we looked at several in the area; but it seemed like we always came back to this one or compared the other houses to this one. We put in an offer on this one in November and now it's ours - 1970's decor and all. As I said, the potential is there... you just need to look past the ugly!
We've had a home inspection done and 92% of the problems with this place are cosmetic, lucky for us!
Ok, onto the photos...
These are all realtor listing photos - all the stuff (well, most of it) went with the previous owners.
You've already seen the front in my previous post, so here's the back! The house sits on a double corner lot, so it's an above average sized yard as well as fairly deep. You can't see it in the photo, but there are patio doors behind that giant pine tree that lead out to a covered, paved patio.
The plan for the outside: Paint the siding and trim, new shutters, landscaping, new garage door
The Bedrooms (there are four):
Master Bedroom
There are double closets and an attached "bathroom" << I put that in quotations because that bathroom is seriously a joke. I'll address that another time.
Guest Bedroom
This is actually the largest bedroom, but for now will be a guest bedroom. Don't worry, they took that amazing bedspread with them!
The plan: New carpet, new window treatments, new ceiling fan
Charlie's Bedroom
This will be Charlie's room for now. It's the perfect size for him. It looks a little circus like right now because of the red carpet and the new paint (which isn't pictured). Charlie has requested "BLUE!!!" for the walls, so blue they shall be!
The plan: New carpet, paint, new window treatments, new ceiling fan
Bedroom #4 aka: The Toy Room
This is technically a bedroom, but we're turning it into a toy room for now in hopes to contain the mass of toys our child has accumulated into one area of the house. I know they'll spill out, but at least I can try!
The plan: New vinyl/laminate flooring, new paint, new window treatments, new ceiling fan
Bathroom #1
This bathroom is located down by the bedrooms. Yes, that is carpet. In a bathroom. I don't think I've mentioned it, but there are technically four bathrooms in this house - BUT, there's no bathtub! Crazy, right?
The plan: Unfortunately, there's not much of a plan for this bathroom right now. Other than to get rid of the fish curtains, those need to go away. In the future - I'm hoping in the next 3ish years, we'd like to combine this bathroom and the "bathroom" that connects to the master bedroom (they share the wall that the toilet and vanity are on) and make a giant "super bathroom".
Bathroom #2 - No Photo
Currently this is a half bath - toilet and a vanity, that's it. There is a giant closet that isn't really necessary.
The plan: This is where the bath tub will go! We're doing a full remodel of this bathroom before we move in. New everything, with the exception of the walls!
Bathroom #3 and Bathroom #4 are both a bit of a joke. I don't even want to talk about it.. haha
The Living Room/Family Room
I'm sorry if the carpet triggers your gag reflex!
This realllllly loooonnngg room (28 feet to be exact) is technically a living room and a dining room, as you can see below. I wish these photos showed the windows, because those are really the highlight of the whole room - floor to ceiling! There are a lot of nice built-ins too that you can't really see.
We're actually going to flip-flop the spaces. The part with the fireplace is going to be a small "adult" seating area. Just a few comfy chairs and a table - a place to sit in front of the fire (once we fix the fireplace anyway) and read a book or something.
What is currently the dining room will become the living room space.
The plan: New carpet, paint, new lighting, new window treatments, get rid of the wood paneling above the fireplace
The Kitchen & Breakfast Nook
I'm especially looking forward to this space. The kitchen is approximately 5 times the size of our current kitchen! And that's not even counting the breakfast nook - which is the reason we don't need the formal dining room. The windows and patio door overlook the backyard, and the patio doors open up to a covered patio.
The cabinets may be ugly, but they are solid, in a great layout and have surprisingly modern features - such as pull out shelving in several spots and pan dividers. There's also 3 built-in cutting boards.
I seriously don't even know what I'm going to fill all the cabinets with - there's a whole other wall that you can't even see that features a built-in desk.
The plan: This won't happen right away, but I'm pushing to at least get started this year... new flooring, refinish the cabinets (or replace the doors/hardware), new lighting, new countertops, new window treatments, new paint
The Laundry Room/Mudroom
First floor laundry-- woohoo!! There's also a large closet and tons of cabinetry. The door on the left opens to the garage and the bathroom that we're currently remodeling is also down on this end of the house.
The plan: At this point, not much. New flooring hopefully sooner rather than later, new lighting. We'll likely refinish the cabinets when we do the kitchen ones since they currently match.
The Office/Entry
A weird thing about this house - it has two front doors. One of them opens into what we will be using as our office space. The man who built this house was a realtor way back when, so he built it with two entries to keep his business and home a little separate. This room connects through the laundry room.
The plan: New flooring, new lighting, get rid of or paint the paneling, new curtains
The Basement/1970's "Love Den"
Again, sorry about the gag reflex ;)
The basement is large and partially finished. There is another fireplace down here and also a bar (not pictured). The storage space is unbelievable (there are 3 areas like the third photo) and if we ever run out of space we seriously belong on an episode of 'Hoarders'.
So, that's that. What do you think of our new 1970's castle?
Are we in over our heads? Probably.
We've already started on quite a few of the projects I've mentioned. New carpet is being installed in the bedrooms and living room at the end of the month - thank goodness.

Congrats Michelle! So exciting! This house looks so spacious and has tons of potential!!! Can't wait to see what you do with it!
There is so much room! If you aren't afraid of some projects (which of course you aren't) it looks like a great snag! :-) Can't wait to see how things progress!
